Teaser Tuesday #1

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:
  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) "teaser" sentences from somewhere on that page BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS!
  • (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

Okkk :) So currently, I am reading alot of books so I'll just pick one randomly and do that. :)

Untamed, by P.C. and Kristin Cast. This is the fourth book in the House of Night series by them, and I am on page 168.

"I think I do see,"I said carefully, still trying to calm him with my touch. "Maybe you should put up your bow and arrow, at least until you really have a handle on this gift of yours."
And that's my first teaser. :3

Crank Book Review (#1)

My life was fine before I met the monster. After, life was great, at least for a little while.

Kristina is the perfect daughter: gifted high school junior, quiet, never any trouble. The she meets the monster: crank. And what begins as a wild ride turns into a struggle for her mind, her soul-her life.

And end dramatic scene! In case you're wondering what the heck you just read was, than I shall tell you: it was the summary on the back of the book Crank by Ellen Hopkins. See what I did there?
I have to admit, the only thing I knew about this book prior to reading it, was the fact that it was about drug addiction. And immediately the topic pulled me in. Now, this is a book written in verse, meaning it's written like a very long poem, and also meaning I finished it the day I received it.
OK, plot line time. Shall we make this ridiculously simple? This book is about a girl named Kristina who goes and visits her drug addicted dad for three weeks in the summer. She meets a boy named Adam, falls in love, he offers her drugs, and she takes them. The rest of the book tells what her life at home is like while dealing with the addiction.

Now onto the review! Let's make a list of pro and cons, shall we?
PROS:
  • The book reels you in from paragraph -er. stanza- one. I read for two hours straight.
  • I love how Mrs. Hopkins portrayed the characters. They really did resemble the adolescents of our time (well most of them anyway).
  • Also, I believe it was a very interesting way to show a character's bad side. To give her a name and a personality. Metaphorically, I believe we all have another side which we would want to be kept away from the world. Whether it be for the fear of rejection, hatred, or shame.
And now the cons.
CONS:
  • For some reason, in today's media, people think the aspect of love is somewhere along the lines of this: boy and girl meet, after speaking one word to each other, they fall in love. .....What? Honestly can you look at a person and go, "They are so nice and funny! They are going to treat me well, never hurt me, and love all the same stuff I do!" The answer? No. You can feel attraction to a person, but 'love at first sight' doesn't exist. I would normally put up with this in most Y.A. fiction novels, but where this is dealing with a serious issue and realistic problems, I can not over look the fake idea of automatically falling in love with a person you don't know.
  • It is said throughout the book that Kristina was a very smart student in school. So they never had something along the lines of 'Drug Awareness Day'? I mean I understand that she absolutely had to snort crank because the love-of-her-life-whom-she-as-only-known-a-week-told her she should; but really, if you're going to make a character who is gullible, make one who isn't supposedly smart. (Did that make sense?)
  • She doesn't try to stop. I realize it is called an addiction, but never throughout the book does it say something remotely related to, "Darn this is really going to hurt all of my family and friends if they find out, I better at least try to stop." That would have help me relate to the character more; if she, you know, had a conscience.

And that is the list! Fear it! Ha, ha, but seriously you guys it's an okay book and I give it 3/5 stars or a B-. (Depending on which rating system you use.)
OK so you can click here to buy Crank. And click here to go to my (crappy) YouTube channel where I've done a video version of this review. (From now on I'll be doing both because I can sit down and think when I write, but in my videos, I'm spontaneous and say 'Ummm' alot.)
Well my first post is over.....by! :D
